#introduction
I'm Baldur Bjarnason. Currently Technical Lead for Rebus Foundation (a not-for-profit working on Open Textbooks and Open Education Resources). Been doing the web thing for a long time (around 20 years). Also spent a lot of time in the digital publishing trenches.
Please be patient with those that don't understand "federation" the way you do.
To geeks federation means a world of endless possibilities. Don't like something? Roll your own instance and change it.
For non-geeks, federations quite reasonably means something different. It's a world of fixed possibilities and limited tools to discover/explore those possibilities.
Both views are valid and as people develop tools to lower the barriers to instance creation/discovery the divide will lessen.
instances.mastodon.xyz lists 326 nodes with over 123,000 combined users. Incredible
The #Wordpress plugin allowing you to easily embed #Mastodon statuses may be now ready to download at https://wordpress.org/plugins/embed-mastodon/ :sunglasses:

I'd love to find a Mastodon instance that is purely rated G. Anyone? I want a safe place for my son to type out his fun facts. He can give fun facts for hours on end about history and science. It gives me headaches for a couple hours of that so I figured this would be a good place for him to release his knowledge.
Also we are going to need people to localize the onboarding modals. We already have volunteers for French and Japanese. Highest priority next would be German and Spanish, given the current Mastodon userbase. After that: Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Malay, and Russian (in no particular order) would all be good to have so we've covered the Top Ten Internet Languages.
If you wanna localize into any language, but especially those, direct post me please!! #MastoDev
Hey if you just joined on mastodon.social feel free to write an #introduction so we can figure out who to follow and you can find other people!
I'm told that the green check mark means it's your primary instance (so my primary instance is on octodon.social). It's not the same thing as 'verified' on FB or the CAGE.

i'm gonna go out on a limb and say
i wouldn't trust any end to end encryption that somebody rolls themselves, that probably won't come with any source code or auditability. no matter how much experience someone claims to have in security.
in fact if they had that much experience, they'd *know* nobody should believe them when they offer such things, and that it'd probably be crap
I don't want to get deep into these politics but a lot of girls, especially cis girls, have been gaslit since a very young age into thinking that they are not capable of working with technology. So long as culture is determined by owners, mainstream instance culture will likely always trend masculine.
Major update to my Mastodon network stats script:
- Shows stuff related to statuses/connections now.
- Added colour (can be turned off)
- Added the ability to show more instance stats.
See the help for details.

So...like making a code of contact that says roughly "Don't be a dick" is like 9/11?

While there's quite a few Mastodon bots already, I hadn't seen any games implemented until @slipstream mentioned @BotBotBotus , which is a French word-guessing game.
There are a number of Twitter bots that do games, but they're tightly constrained by the character limit. With more space to work with, there's a lot of unexplored possibilities.

Another PSA for Masto newbies:
If you use the #introduction hashtag, then RANDOS MAY JUMP INTO YOUR MENTIONS to… welcome you warmly to Mastodon. Yeah it's a different culture here.
@nolan
Mastotip: You can click on the time of the post to open it on the posters instance and thus see everything they see. This also makes you see the whole thread so you don't miss out on replies.
So is "Mastodon Gold" an actual thing, or are people just trolling? (In one case quite cleverly, if it's a troll, at least.)
My one thing with Mastadon #Federation . I don't mind if my stuff is seen across many instances but I'd love to see more from other instances. I just hope that followbots pick up good critical mass to make the federated timeline more of a global feel as opposed to being just local + some bonus.
And yes, this means you might not be seeing the "full" data on a toot from across the whole Fediverse. My justification for this is:
1. Masto UI doesn't put emphasis on boosts/favs; you don't even see it in the list view. So no more prejudging a post based on how many of your friends approve/disapprove of it.
2. Every instance has its own culture, and some cultures are shockingly different. Maybe we don't need to know what the Nazi instances had to say in response to that toot. Just sayin'.
