A great review I just saw of Mastodon:

"It’s like if twitter and tumblr had a baby and the baby was a significantly better, more likeable person than either of its parents."

⚠️ Mastodon is not anti-Nazi, or anti-harassment. (Not even Mastodon.Social is very anti-harassment.) Anyone can run an instance, including Nazis. Including abusers. Including techbros who don't give a shit.

This is why your choice of instance matters. Know who your admin is. Check your blocklist. Check the code of conduct.

Not everyone cares about your safety, and no one is really required to.

Be kind. Be careful. Punch Nazis.

"To help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same."

Hi! I'm Alice, although I answer to pear as well. Queer cis woman, she/her. I have a MLIS but I'm not a librarian. I live in Seattle with my husband & cat.

You may know me from the bird site, Tumblr, or fandom. My hobbies include fucking around on the internet, overanalyzing media, writing fanfic, the occasional video game, & getting into weirdly specific research spirals. hmu if you want to talk about those.

I'm not a nice person, but I strive to be a kind one.

Putting the call out again: is there a oriented Mastodon instance? I know you're out there, people!

Honestly its pretty great when children clock me. They often ask me "are you a boy or a girl?" or something similar, and I get to tell them "neither!" or "you can be whatever you want!" Their parents often try to make their kid stop talking to me, but I see the look of possibility in the faces of those kids. It's lovely to see.

it's so bizarre that everyone's judgment of mastodon's success uses the same rubric as twitter's success.

for me, marginalized ppl feeling loved, cared for, and supported in a radical, restorative space is a success and I don't think forbes will ever understand that

My analysis : Capitalism is a failure

A delightful picnic on Hampstead Heath. The sun is shining. Everyone is happy. A remarkable number of people are gay and / or speaking French.

I think I've found Mastodon IRL.

One of the things I like about Mastodon is that there's still that delight of serendipitous discovery because it's decentralized. Somebody on the local or the federated timeline points/boosts to something cool? Now you know about it too.

who's fuckin' surprised that a Mastodon instance with this domain is banned for oppressive shitposting  octodon.social/media/ygDHMu-DS

Legit tho guys (in the generic people/gender-neutral sense), the furries have more instances than fandom does. Hell, the Marxists and a dancing banana have one (it is unknown to me whether members are actually Marxists or dancing bananas). We should do this.

The one subculture/community I haven't seen much on Mastodon is . I know ppl from fandom on here, but there hasn't been a significant enough presence that I could find "my people".

Mastodon would be a great home for fandom. You can have per-fandom instances, or have a fandom-specific instance (preferred). There's built-in functionality for spoilers and cw's & ability to set per-instance rules for interaction. The segmentation of identity would be useful as well.

Somebody do the thing!

Rule of Mastodition #33: There are furries. You might as well deal with it.

Although it's not possible to browse the timeline of a #Mastodon instance where you don't have an account (unfortunate IMO), it *is* possible to visit, e.g. mastodon.social/tags/topic to see public posts tagged with a particular #hashtag, in this case, "#topic".

Could be interesting to compare music tastes, for example, between different instances before choosing one to join.

Or frequency of posts marked #AWOO

There isn't enough patience in the world for people who actively put obstacles in front of others who struggle daily with maintaining happiness. We don't all share the same circumstances, and most of us aren't fortunate enough to have a life of optional suffering and voluntary anxiety.

good manners and a little consideration takes almost no effort and can help improve the tone and energy of an individual or an entire community. Don't drain it. Fill it back up. Top it off.

Back when I was active on Usenet it was considered pretty normal to have house rules for any newsgroup, you were also expected to refrain from posting long enough to notice and learn the unspoken customs (this was called "lurking").

Nowadays people see it as an orchestrated attack against free speech, shout references to 1984, and threaten to move elsewhere.

Yet the ones asking us all to behave politely are called "hypersensitive"?
