Not sure what to make of #Quad9 (IBM'S new DNS service).
The privacy policy seems better than Google/OpenDNS. No storage/transfer of IP data and they even disable EDNS0 (on their main IP).
There is no support for DNSCrypt or DNSCurve, but they do support DNS-over-TLS. Which makes some sense, considering they are targeting IOT devices that are unlikely to support DNSCrypt or have the HW to do so.
Free DNS with active threat blocking could be big security win for everyone.
@memnus In Canada I've only seen body scanners at US preclearance. If you're flying within Canada or internationally, it's usually metal detectors.
I think the thing I miss most from birdsite is black birdsite. Who should I be following here?

Proposal: USians stop using “PST” and “EST” and start saying “UTC-8” and “UTC-5” so I can work out what actual damn time you mean in my head.
Alternately, list local and UTC?
Also it’d be great if you didn’t use “summer” and “winter” as an approximate date. Sincerely, the other hemisphere.

"Well yes I've considered becoming a nun so I could be one of those protesting nuns who gets arrested a lot. ...I don't know what they say when you show up like 'yes I'd like to be Sister Mary Chains-Herself-to-Nukes.'" -- telling my husband that I'm thinking about other life paths.

Amazing! :cherry_blossom: :cherry_blossom: :cherry_blossom: Japan has records of when the cherry trees blossom each year going back 1200 years. Spoiler: it's getting earlier. (Don't miss the correction.)

So here is a weird thing that I just realized...
Mastodon does not show you a number with a post to indicate how much reach it has had.
I suppose with federation this would never be complete, but it is still strange.
I wrote this post that went a bit viral, but I have no clue how viral beyond like sitting and counting notifications...
Is that a feature? I am not 100 pct sure it feels like a feature to me.
Is this a confession? I loved hits on Twitter.
Maybe too much?
You know instance admins can read your direct messages in the fediverse? Twitter and Facebook also can - and sometimes do - read your private messages, and they have infrastructure to comply with law enforcement requests. I'd love to see some end-to-end encryption built into Mastodon clients.
you know... you think it's going to be bad now when Birdland explodes with horribleness. We might not get that way, if instance owners get their way and hard-enforce their rules, but... taking down instances via DDOS is going to be SO MUCH easier now. or pwning the servers. man. the security landscape and space-for-fuckery has changed.
