Honestly, the CW is a brilliant and thoughtful move. It provides a "heads-up" that what lies ahead may be unsettling to some. What makes it even more thoughtful are the tooters who use the "top line" to give an idea of what the actual content is about. This alone is enough for me to fully embrace Mastodon. I, for one, will be here until the last instance goes offline. Yesterday, Mastodon gained my curiosity. . .today it has won my loyalty.

The one encouraging point being made here is the White House couldn't just phone over to the NSA and get this in-house thru channels.

Here's a thing that makes Mastodon instances work less well than they could...
when you visit an instance, all the front pages look the same.
"About this instance" is a TINY little link under the sign-up form. This is crazy.
Instances should LEAD with a community description, not bury it.
That's like a newsgroup leading with the OS it used to run the newsgroup rather than saying: "This is a Kenny G community"

@krypteia If Mastodon takes off, there might be room for one or more verified Mastodons for brands. Or corps could run their own instances, where domain demonstrates identity.

Mastodon would benefit from a third-party search engine. Federated search is difficult.

So ... you can #search for hashtags, but not for free text? So people should use #hashtags. Also, clicking on a hashtag does a search for it.
But again, the searches are limited to toots from local instance users and the people that they follow.
I think.

I like how the hyperlinks here are links directly to the thing and not via a tracking redirect

How do I install Mastodon on my toaster #federationofthings

the best thing about joining the CPC is the 10x daily emails where all the leadership candidates trash one another like the insufferable assholes they are :sunglasses:

INTRO TO FEDERATION:

1. "mastodon" is a piece of software that runs on a server. There's a lot of servers that run it & u can follow ppl on other servers.

2. When u follow someone from another server, your server receives their toots.

3. The federated TL is all public toots that the server receives, ie all of the toots from everyone that ppl on your server follow.

4. ERGO: if u want to see more toots in the fed TL, follow + get other ppl on your server to follow ppl from other servers!

TIL in enums can work like tagged unions.

TIL in constant expressions aren't allowed in patterns. 2 is a valid pattern; 1+1 isn't.

We're gearing up for another conference in 2017 - stay tuned!

hypothesis: if too many early users sign up on mastodon.social instead of other instances, federation will end up becoming a second-class feature. (imagine what email today would look like if gmail had existed in the 90s.)

other instances need to be able to compete with mastodon.social for growth, or github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/ should be implemented.

Is anyone out there working at a big Silicon Valley tech company that has shuttle services?

I am curious if any workers at the companies have advocated for or against the organizing of workers at shuttle operators. I would really like to hear about any actions folks have taken to let management know what workers think about those efforts.

I can keep your name out of what I write, if you want.
