Saw this guy at the old donut shop, prob
~85 years old, sporting his "Association of Rodeo Committees" leather jacket. The West is pretty boss sometimes.
There's this unfortunate challenge right now whereby one politically partisan group is hugging free speech to its chest, and the other is really worried about ideological contagion. I believe everybody needs the freedom to communicate, but it's hard to explain to one side that that includes feeling safe enough to speak and having the right not to listen. And the other side that when you decide to create the right to silence others, it's not the powerless who gain that right.
@xor @yellowfrog it's worthwhile exploring some of the reasons why people feel phone numbers are private/valuable (without judging them). Off the top of my head:
1) Single phone number -> person mapping means hard to compartmentalise different identities
2) Possibility of harassment tied to knowledge of phone (why people want to keep emails addresses secret too)
3) Expensive to discard phone number, so permanent identifier
4) Phone co. can map to name/address
art from about 9 months ago. Custom slit scanner-like app. Thinking about doing some more framed prints of these (I only do unique prints, so they’re all 1/1s)

The phone-number/Signal and social-security-number/credit-score repurposings break down in the same way: nobody knows whether it's a username or password
I'm going to call it #buddyboost
Also, I would love to see these from others, and further my life-goal of mostly experiencing the art and creations of minor-minor <-> major-minor artists, writers, etc.
This probably needs some hashtags
Susan Defreitas is a great writer/editor who published her first novel this year. If you spent your youth in activist circles it will be particularly funny.

I think I'm just going to start repping friends' work that I really enjoy on here periodically.
#MastoAdmins Idea: create an invite-only instance for Mastodon admins where we can talk about admin stuff, and where we also run the bleeding-edge version of Mastodon so we can find issues early.
"Communicating to the development staff that these features are important to you is the best way to ensure they are made priorities and quickly implemented. The current project manager for Mastodon is @maloki, and you can (respectfully!) contact her with any questions you have about these new features."
AGPL was a bold pick for the Mastodon license. It means that anyone running the software is obligated to share any changes they make with people who use it - even if all those changes are on the server side, and the users are just people who visit the site. This is much more restrictive than regular GPL, which doesn't count it as "distribution" people only access via the web.
Corporate entities are going to stay the hell away from any AGPL code. I guess that's the point.
The unsexy future of ebooks: they will probably play an important role as technical manuals, etc and all the other junk books you see at the thrift store and save paper/trouble/cost but probably won't replace the books that people read for pleasure (novels, poetry) except as an ancillary tool.
The internet's unsexy thing-that-must-not-be-uttered: the truth makes horrible clickbait.

Still more tech journalism on Mastodon: "Mastodon cannot survive with such a silly name. It needs a more serious and business-friendly name, such as Google, Yahoo, or Hulu."
So on Android web interface I am experiencing extreme (100 second+ long) lags if I try to navigate to another user's profile, or do anything while on their profile (like switching from Home to Notifications for instance).
Been happening for ~12 hours. Everything else on my phone behaves fine. Desktop web interface works fine.
Just an fyi
OK sneak peek for my Mastopals of the new 8-bit Use Signal Use Tor icons since those jerks over at Whisper Systems up and changed their logo on me https://mastodon.xyz/media/RKXIYh0v53_dQkbTDLE
I wonder if I can find any literature (or just blog posts) about the value of soft "cooperative" security features?
I should probably write something about this myself, actually.
I'd like to implement both "request recipient delete a message" and "burn after reading" style features for #Mailpile, but it's important to get the UI right so users aren't misled.
Maybe I'll start with a discussion on GH.
