A culture of zero-tolerance towards harassment and/or abuse is bound to come as a bit of a shock to some people.
We're so used to casual awfulness both online and in meatspace, it will be jarring to be somewhere where the rules are completely different.
Even if you agree with the rules!
I think it's interesting that a significant chunk of the #Fediverse is trying to make this change. It won't be easy.
Adding an 0.96" OLED screen to my Wifi/LTE router.
Thank you @adafruit for the SSD1306 python library 😍

If anyone want to build a liaison team, which help facilitate dialogue between instance admins and users on other servers, we will be behind you, and help you spread the word, and help you get access and contact where we can. We will also help you spread the word about any funding model you choose, or don't choose.
This is part of the beauty with an open source project, not only can you take the code and do something new with it, but you can also make your own project in the social aspect of it
#Mastodon Announcement:
We would like to make a distinction regarding the work @Gargron and I are doing, and the greater community. Gargron's work in regards to the Mastodon Project is only concerned with the software. That's his thing, and his goal. My work as a Project Manager for the Mastodon Project is thus also mainly revolved around that.
However, we want to help you get the word out when other projects pop up which are of the greater good of the community. That being said:
Gargron and I, in regards to the Mastodon Project would only become a bottle neck, to help with these matters. So it is better that we understand that the community needs this, and let it free. We do not have to own it.
As in regards to mastodon.social and it's admin team, we have discussed how that can be improved on our side.

Bad idea of the day: an instance where all toots are encoded with a vignere cypher, with the key chosen at random from a dictionary every 3 hours. The key is kept secret from the users. If a user determines the key & types it, s/he is put in a "hall of fame" list & the key is reset.

@nolan yeah, super fascinating. interesting to see how powerful the rationale has been for so long. Imagine a world where when you're misconstrued in print it may take weeks (or months) to address it.
I'd like to be able to postpone toots!
Yes, I'd like this for marketing-style activities. I am a self-employed micropreneur after all.
But I'd also like it so I can "subtoot" without it being obvious what the inspiration is. If or when I subtoot, I'm deliberately trying to *not* call out the people that inspired me.
Conversations here are very inspiring and thought provoking, I'd like to be able to express my reactions without it always being personal or "taking sides."
A delay would help.
one thing I would not mind would be seeing people I'm connected to at the top of other users' following/er lists
Do you know what would make me very happy?
It is seeing other creatives using #ArtwithOpenSource tag.
Do you use open source software in your art, photography, music, film, games? Consider tagging? Maybe? Please? :)
#FrowbackFriday I spent 10+ hours on social media website fanart, so here's a revised version of that with a more general tagline.

There's this unfortunate challenge right now whereby one politically partisan group is hugging free speech to its chest, and the other is really worried about ideological contagion. I believe everybody needs the freedom to communicate, but it's hard to explain to one side that that includes feeling safe enough to speak and having the right not to listen. And the other side that when you decide to create the right to silence others, it's not the powerless who gain that right.
@xor @yellowfrog it's worthwhile exploring some of the reasons why people feel phone numbers are private/valuable (without judging them). Off the top of my head:
1) Single phone number -> person mapping means hard to compartmentalise different identities
2) Possibility of harassment tied to knowledge of phone (why people want to keep emails addresses secret too)
3) Expensive to discard phone number, so permanent identifier
4) Phone co. can map to name/address
@HerraBRE That's why I always register Signal with someone else's phone number
