So the local weather forecast calls for incoming thunderstorms... with rain likely evaporating before it hits the ground... not good for our already scary fire danger (I'm in San Luis Obispo County, coast central Cal)

It's just that there has been a divergence in the definition of Crank (perpetrator of opinions that annoy - nowadays more of a provocateur) and Cranky (synonym for Grouchy).
@infini
that's almost me... (without the long socks and hair bun, but my hair has grown so long a manbun is becoming an option)

Scalzi (who I knew from when I tried to sell him humor content when he worked for AOL in the '90s) is a True Crank, but not Truly Cranky (there is a diff).
@infini @joshmillard
I don't think Scalzi has ever "done" PKD the way he has "done" Heinlein, Trek ("Redshirts"), Robin Cook ('Lock In" as a better "Coma'), Piper ("Fuzzy" literaly) and OSC ("OMW" as the opposite of "Ender'). He is the sum of many influences but notsomuch Philip K Dick.
I think it's super important that we realize that Mastodon isn't "the next Twitter / Tumblr / whatever". It's not there yet. I was on the ground floor when people were "migrating" to Google Plus, and that went so horribly because we all thought it was gonna kill Facebook tomorrow.
We won't kill *anything* unless we make this a place people want to come to by 1) keeping all oppressors out and 2) making good community / context / posts
Ryan North is the Indisputable Master Genius of Comics (even if T. Rex in Dinosaur Comics has become boring over 14 years), but he got Garfield's Jim Davis (or his art staff) to do a couple pages for Marvel's Squirrel Girl with Galactus as Garfield.

I have been with Metafilter since its beginnings in 1999 as an "open group blog", and followed its expansion into Ask (now its most popular section though the one I DON'T regularly follow) and FanFare (responding to the shutting down of a couple good media sites). AskMeFi has some running jokes ("Can I eat this" questions about expiration dates and relationship questions with 'dump the MF" answers) but it's better than most internet "ask" sites.

@infini As a lifelong WM, I have zero trouble with the idea of "silencing WMs'. The repetitive noise they produce are tedious and boring,
