A good Philip K. Dick story would be about a deceased sci-fi author who ascended to godhood and then punished humanity for their uneven attempts to make film adaptations of his written work by making them live through one of his worse unpublished drafts.

I don't think Scalzi has ever "done" PKD the way he has "done" Heinlein, Trek ("Redshirts"), Robin Cook ('Lock In" as a better "Coma'), Piper ("Fuzzy" literaly) and OSC ("OMW" as the opposite of "Ender'). He is the sum of many influences but notsomuch Philip K Dick.

Scalzi (who I knew from when I tried to sell him humor content when he worked for AOL in the '90s) is a True Crank, but not Truly Cranky (there is a diff).

It's just that there has been a divergence in the definition of Crank (perpetrator of opinions that annoy - nowadays more of a provocateur) and Cranky (synonym for Grouchy).
