I really do not understand why people use GitHub over Gitlab AT ALL.
GitLab consistently brings out AMAZING features at least 1x/month. Their company is ethical (donates regularly to amazing coding groups like BlackGirlsCode, DjangoGirls, PythonLadies, etc.).
Just look for yourself: https://about.gitlab.com/features/
Oh for fuck's sake, OpenSSL. Just when I was starting to think they'd finally gotten their shit together
hi it's april 15 and there's a blizzard outside
An oldie but a goodie: The Case of the 500-Mile Email:
"We're having a problem sending email out of the department."
"What's the problem?" I asked.
"We can't send mail more than 500 miles," the chairman explained.
I choked on my latte. "Come again?"
"We can't send mail farther than 500 miles from here," he repeated. "A little bit more, actually. Call it 520 miles. But no farther."
Someone in my social circle just built a new high powered windows PC and shared a photo of the innards, and I felt so confused for awhile cause I haven't built a PC since the IDE cable days.
Technical Note: We originally wrote this article in Word, but then we converted it to Latex to make it look more like science.
reminder that making bread is exceedingly occult, you're ritually creating a tiny microcosm and then destroying it in fire to create the very first meaningful food ever made, the thing that made us settle down and start doing civilization

For every new software feature you want to add, think, "How would a group of persistent, tech savvy people use this feature to harass someone."
Maybe that means you decide not to implement it. Maybe that means you work on something else that would support people who get the majority of harassment.
life hack: buy a bag of Starburst jellybeans. hide it from everyone; eat it all yourself.
PSA and reminder:
The terms "blacklist" and "whitelist" are racially charged. Please use "blocklist" and "allowlist" instead.
Yes, the terms are old. Yes they're not directly based on race. But they _are_ based in the systemic idea that "white == good; black == bad". Just because something is traditional doesn't mean it's acceptable.
It took me a while to see just how insidious little things like this are, too. It's ok to take some time to understand. Just please switch terms while you do.

The Trump administration wants heavy surveillance over social media of anyone crossing the border: https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/29/politics/immigrants-social-media-information/index.html?sr=fbCNN032918immigrants-social-media-information0127PMVODtop
Folks, the stuff we're working on matters. We need to bring social media underground. Put users in control.
