If anyone here has Radio 4 access, my latest play (which is fucking INSANE) goes out today at 2.15pm GMT. All feedback welcome. It'll be on iPlayer shortly after broadcast. And I advise listening on headphones if you can. bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08kvnfg

So, can someone explain to me why people who don't like posts about politics can't just not follow people who post about politics?

Genuine question. Because I do feel that the stakes are society itself, and the life or death of millions, and I do feel that OStatus/GNU Social could and should play an important role in this.

A civil discussion on this would be appreciated.

So does anyone want to design an octodon.social "tribe" badge? I'd like to have something to stick over my profile pic to declare my allegiance...

@orielle That's what makes it so interesting fore

Learning the ropes here by experimentation. Really like what I see. The Octodon empire is growing fast :)

Happy to call Octodon home. Excited to see how it will grow bit by byte.

@Rushyo Plus, I think there's other ways to mitigate fakes, but they require a certain level of public awareness. News sites could run their own instances, so if Tom Brokaw isn't tooting from @brokaw@nbc.com, you know they're a fake. An instance could host celeb accounts and offer verification services, so the domain is the validation, not some checkmark. It's a different way of thinking about social networking, but probably a healthier/more sustainable one in the long run.

It's kinda weird to think about a social network where businesses own their own presences, rather than relying on a capricious third party service like Twitter or Facebook. Imagine NBC or The Verge running a Mastodon instance for their reporters to toot from, or Bethesda operating an instance for PR and customer support. No more lost business when Facebook changes their algorithms again because they need more money from boosted posts.

Weird, right?

Right, I gotta go get some work done :(

@britt Although Octodon disappears we're screwed :/

@britt Gotcha. Think of it like email. We're on Octadon like we might both be on Gmail but we can still send and receive messages with folks on Outlook or Hotmail.

@britt Er, rooms? You've got me there. What 'rooms'?

@britt Everwhere if you've set your post to Public

My only rules are: be useful, interesting or funny. Ideally all three.

Another question... when I go to follow someone on another instance sometimes it happens instantly as if they're on the same instance (but they're not) and sometimes you have to do a couples of extra steps (Follow Remotely) indicating your own full identity+instance. Why?

Twitter was, and still is, conceptually fascinating - like broadcast television for the 21st century. Constant stream of channels to choose from in real-time. The timeline and mention changes have turned it into little more than a Facebook competitor. The monetisation issue always seemed to have an obvious solution in ecommerce. Thankfully Mastodon is fundamentally divorced from VC startup culture.
