@gargron could we remove the consent line at the top? It seems like an unhelpful legal fiction that people are "consenting" to policies we know they haven't read.
@torgo fyi, locals don't use "the" when referring to Bart
Remember what you are grateful for, and keep that list up to date.
And, if you're a Web nerd like me, put that list online: https://npdoty.name/gratitude.md
@nightpool I've received the advice that practicing self-compassion can be helpful in those cycles and I've had some limited success with that. And it is something you can practice, and get better at, with loving kindness meditation for example.
In any case, good luck! You can do it.
@gargron I think the limitations of Instagram have been important for its usability and popularity, even as those limitations have been eased over time. Single photo, square photo, no links, no reposts, downplayed text -- all those limits made Instagram a certain kind of thing for users.
I agree that Mastodon servers could implement those or similar restrictions, and I'd love such a service, but it isn't just appearance.
"W1A" is unexpectedly amazing, like a self-referential BBC combination of "The Office" and "Yes, Minister".
I feel like there's actually no one I know that I could recommend it to, but meanwhile, I'm laughing, loudly, through every episode.
The Internet lost a hero today. EFF is mourning the loss of our visionary co-founder, John Perry Barlow. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/02/john-perry-barlow-internet-pioneer-1947-2018
@baldur those conversations at TPAC were both so interesting and also so challenging, in that different people were talking past each other because of different assumptions.
Want: one of those smart digital assistants, but when you ask it what time it is, it responds with the current reading of the Doomsday Clock.
How would I contact graphic designers interested in commissions to make icon sets?
I want to make a set of icons (for use as Slack/Mastodon custom emoji and other contexts) for plant species. In particular, I would want to start with common California-native trees and flowers, but this could be a wide-ranging project.

@mikegerwitz it's great to talk codes of #ethics for technology!
Before you get too far into coming up with a new code, could I introduce you to some academics who have studied many of the existing codes? It can be especially tempting to assume there's nothing out there and start fresh, but indeed many people have suggested similar projects in the past.
/cc @annaeveryday or I can introduce you via email in case she's not checking Mastodon

A reflection on the media inundation of a family member, and a reminder to myself and others about #privacy, #harassment, filtering and #accessibility.
@22 I think elaborating on that list of questions, potential answers, and identifying the regulatory levers and groups to help, would be a great addition to fleshing out the idea (rather than a reason it ought not to be pursued).
Online advertisers (including Google) have already conducted some experiments along these lines, e.g. https://contributor.google.com/v/beta
@22 our experience with marijuana legalization sounds like a useful counterexample to his argument, though. Legalization is indeed complicated. If you tried to figure out every single detail prior to implementation, it wouldn't have happened anywhere in the US. Instead, states have made high-level (VP-level, say) decisions based on evidence and legal drafting, and assigned regulatory authorities to work out details prior to legalization, and adjustments are made afterwards over time.

@ajroach42 I love it. I think the fiction piece is the most accessible and most compelling description; maybe that should be the introduction.
@ross I dream that one day we'll get to the point in society where one can answer that question honestly, even with a negative affect, and have that welcomed.
Or, as an intermediate step, be allowed to answer "not well" and have the conversation continue on just as quickly. (That was a situation I appreciated about November-December 2016.)
> "I have something you want," his hand touched the package. "You have something I want ... five minutes here ... an hour someplace else ... two ... four ... eight ... Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself ... Every day die a little ... It takes up The Time...."
He moved back into the kitchen, his voice loud and clear: "Five years a piece. Nobody gives a better deal on the street."
