If I could convince Mastodon at large of only one thing, it would be this:
if you see someone complaining, DO NOT give them advice.
If someone ASKS for advice, offer it.
But 90% of the time, someone complaining is just venting. They're not telling you the whole story, and they're not receptive to being given advice, because in that mental state, your "good-natured advice" is their "HERE'S HOW YOU'RE DOING THIS WRONG".
Do not respond with advice unless it's asked for.

So my major lesson learned from the #gpg/#pgp thing today is not to trust warnings by EFF in the future – while parts of their warning were factually correct, they were baiting for attention in annoying and unhelpful ways.
This culture of publishing exploits and issues in a publicicty focused way is disturbing. I had hoped the EFF was beyond this needless hyping of vulns. Apparently not.
Ah, they've published their paper, but the tl;dr seems to be: Don't use HTML mails. If you receive an encrypted HTML mail, don't load external ressources. It's a nice attack, sure, but not trusting HTML mails in the first place is hardly a novel concept. Details: https://efail.de/ #gpg #pgp
