8-After moving my home directory to the newly added drive, my sound stopped working at all -- no output device detected. There seem to be solutions, but none of them were very straightforward.
I'm thinking of trying again...a newer #ubuntu version or maybe #mint. I'd really like to switch, but faced more issues than expected. In hindsight, I don't even use picasa or foobar2000 VERY often...so maybe those issues aren't that big a deal. #switchingtolinux #walkofshame #backtowindows #fornow
6-Sharing files between users was annoying (probably because I added the hard drive *after* initial install)...but finally doable by creating a group and setting that group as owner for the drive and mounting it automatically.
7-Getting Rhythm Box to find my music and ShotWell to find my pictures was not nearly as fast pr convenient an experience as Picasa and Foobar2000 provide.
I'm slowly getting things installed on my new build and usually anticipate reinstalling lots of software, but my #GOG games I'd copied over ran right away. I've had similar experiences with steam by copying the folder over, installing, then "pointing" to the data folder. #neverwinternights 2
Unsurprisingly, my new #Ryzen R5 1600 build is a drastic improvement over my old #Athlon 64 x2 6400. I didn't realize how much my #HD7790 was being held back by my CPU. I'm running #quakechampions smoothly now at medium settings and was choppy at low settings before. I'm still no good, but can't blame fps anymore.

5-i clicked and dragged a URL to the desktop to make a shortcut for my kid. it worked, though wasn't pretty (no icon, etc.) -- that was fine. but then i couldn't move the shortcut. strange! i deleted it and used the "add to desktop" option from the browser, which worked well...but what kind of created icon can't be moved around freely on the desktop!?

3-sleep/standby wasn't enabled by default. just for the sake of power conservation, i'd think this setting would be different. it was easy to enable, but...
4-my wireless keyboard and mouse worked out of the box -- yay! they don't wake the computer up from sleep/standby, though, which only worries me because i've had bad luck with power switches on computers breaking prematurely.
so far, i only have a few #linux #complaints. i haven't really researched fixes yet as there are other priorities like getting my rebates sent in and getting my data copied over.
1-steam install on 16.04 should be less problematic. i only had to run a couple of terminal commands, but ugh.
2-the keyring popup for non password protected accounts is real annoying. i know, the accounts need passwords...but i set them up when the fam was sleeping and didn't want to "guess" what they'd want...
so i thought i'd write down some happenings here.
i started by installing #windows as a fall-back after reading it was easier to install #ubuntu second on a #dualboot system. that went well. the #windows10 install went as expected (easy) and the ubuntu install was equally easy. [aside: both installs were super fast on my new M.2 SSD (sata, not nvme)] i was prompted to install 3rd party drivers, which I did (mostly for graphics card use).
first of all, i like #linux. at least, the idea of it. i've used various distributions for years, though mostly for troubleshooting or adding life to older machines. i've wanted to switch as my primary OS, but share the computer with my wife and didn't want to force it on her, plus I game occasionally and that still often necessitates #windows. with much of our work occurring in a browser these days, i thought i'd try with my new build.
I got all the components for my new #pcbuild except my motherboard and am excited to put it together this weekend with my kids! While 6c/12t will be a vast improvement over my existing #athlon 64 x2 @ 3.2 Ghz, I'm hoping I'll get lucky and my #Ryzen R5 1600 will have a couple extra cores like some lucky folks scored a few days ago. Plus it came with #quakechampions which should bring back Q3 Arena memories!
Somehow I'd not heard of Samsung's "Low-cost" HBM. Wonder if this is in the works for #amd with their midrange #navi ?
old article:

I rationalized yesterday that, based on the SIGGRAPH slides showing "SEP" -- that the touted $399 and $499 prices for #amd #radeon #rxvega 56 and 64, respectively, were for limited initial launch quantity (with more cards avaialble in the "miner-detering" packages for $100 more) and then would come back in SEPtember. Seems SEP is Suggested E-tail Price. Official response finally out: https://videocardz.com/72123/amd-issues-official-statement-regarding-radeon-rx-vega-64-pricing #oops https://octodon.social/media/Ne0IvNJrm3jwpLSjIuI
#amd response to #intel #coffeelake prediction/recommendation: next gen #ryzen r3 will be 4c/8t, with r5 at 6c/12t across the board. maybe some low-power variants with SMT disabled. slightly higher clocks (even just boost) would be appreciated.
I have to say I'm pretty impressed with #intel and their #coffeelake lineup. The i5 and i7 changes, 50% more cores and 50% more cores and threads, respectively, are impressive but the i3 is the real stand-out with double the cores and threads (for 83XX, 4 cores no HT for the 81XX and [parts of the] Pentium line)!!! If pricing is close to current offerings, these look competitive and should encourage devs to optimize for more cores! #thanksamd
#AMD announced the pricing and availability for #Threadripper today! ๐
16 cores, 32 threads for $999 in August!

#AMD #Ryzen #R3 officially announced with no mention of graphics, as expected. 4 cores, 4 threads (no SMT). No mention of TDP or price. I really hope they can get below 65w, even though I think an APU will eventually be a much better purchase option for most people looking for this price or level of performance.
I'm replying to myself...because I am pretty sure I'm wrong. The #AMD #Ryzen #R3 seems to be without graphics. I think mobile Ryzen (APUs) will be out Fall, but desktop APUs will be next year. I still worry that R3 won't be as successful as I'd like, but I guess the (current) i5-class core counts may be great for budget gaming builds and increase interest in entry-level and mid-range graphics cards. I get why mobile would be a priority, anyway...since APUs work really well there.
I'm still pretty terrible at #Linux but setting up an #Ubuntu Server is always such an interesting experience.
I configured install over wifi for convenience, but neither wifi nor ethernet were enabled when I booted up.
Thankfully, community resources rescued me, as usual! Next, to get #Samba configured for web development and backup.
-Tech Prediction-
The #AMD #Ryzen R3 will be a Raven Ridge based APU featuring 1 Zen ccx (2/3/4 core variants?) and #Vega graphics. It needs to, to be competitive. The R3 with no graphics won't do well, I think.
If this is known/expected and I've missed it, my apologies. I've searched a few times and found nothing nearly conclusive.
