@rey I perform this check regularly, and I'm always surprised at the number of devices. I track down and name newcomers so I don't wonder what they are. Home network hygiene! Then I make sure that as many as possible are IPv6 enabled!

Today is National Pharmacists Day [1] yet all I can think about is Dr Doofenschmirtz [2]. I'm smiling, yet sorry to all the real pharmacists!

If you feed wild birds, and you're in an area where the temps are unusually low, you may want to give the birds some water, too. Our area is in a drought, so even the little water they normally depend on is probably frozen right now. It doesn't have to be complex, I put out a little plastic bowl, and the chickadees are sipping from it.

@sendnoodles Once I was happier, I had more time for the better friends, I met their friends, and it's easier now.

My mother was one of the people who would not respect my boundaries (like "don't tell my children not to listen to me, esp when I'm standing next to you!"): that was OUCH. I was sad because I was "sure" that would never happen, but when I approached it methodically, it was too obvious.

Now I can happily say that I *love* my friends! It feels right. Hugs if you want, and Good luck!

@sendnoodles Comparing notes with my friend Cheryl, we both had an awkward transition period with empty time that used to be filled with those people who made our lives more challenging.

Our recalibrations were to cut ties with people who made us feel bad, especially in subtle ways. (Cheryl stuck with me through a rough divorce: she said she could always feel that I value her.)

So it probably won't be fun to go THROUGH, but the other side is worth it! My interactions make me feel better now.

@faeylayn I have met ferrets and kittens with that much energy ... whew, now I feel tired!

@sendnoodles That sounds terribly wise, at least if you care about your mental and emotional health (which, as you might guess, I recommend).

@Wolf480pl YES! I love network visibility, especially creating it! Professionally I feel challenged and fulfilled.

My doctoral dissertation was on network management, so it's safe to assume that I'm very interested in it. Luckily, I enjoy it too!

@rey @memnus @faeylayn I still don't know why the narrator voice cracks me up every time, but thank you for giving me smiles!

I wanted everyone to go back to saying "tip" rather than "lifehack" but apparently we should go further Show more

@Wolf480pl I'm ... astounded. I think you just perfectly captured why I do what I do professionally: because I never want to say "I don't know what happened." (It still happens, and then I add something else to monitoring.) The information is there, and I want to capture the useful highlights. MMM, data!

Today is National Card Playing Day, if you need activity ideas for this evening.

Seen on a hardware store sign:

KINDNESS IS FREE
SPRINKLE THAT STUFF ALL AROUND

Be nice to your UPS driver: I knew the weight of what I had ordered, so I zipped outside when I saw the UPS truck. I said "You can set it down *right there* [in my driveway], and I'll get it with my hand truck." He gets points for not setting it down until I said "hand truck" (you know, feasibility), but the sincerity of his THANK YOU astounded me.

I was going to wrangle it inside the house anyway, and I didn't mind starting sooner. I'm glad I could spare his back too.

whenever I see a space or a organization declaring that they don't have a code of conduct, all I see is:

"We have shitty people among us and they are our friends and we don't have have enough of a spine to stand up to them and tell them to fuck off."

or

"We are shitty people that want free license to be shitty to other people."
