@revenant That makes sense too: I probably just wanted an excuse to snuggle cat instead of packing! Cats are more fun!
I used to coax my sons out of bed with the promise of watching Maru on YouTube. Cats who love boxes are great!
@revenant I've always thought that behavior was cat-language for NO, DON'T GO, TAKE ME WITH YOU, EXTRA LOVE NEEDED NOW
@nivex I can't read that without hearing it in Darth Vader voice.

@MililaniVF (3/3) That feels like an apt description of my childhood: I tried to be a good kid, but somehow I was never good enough.
That said, I think my story is the EXCEPTION that proves the rule and your point. Nowadays I don't go anywhere without my phone (and pager) that has all the calculator I need.
@MililaniVF (2/3) However, I had learned how to approximate square roots, and the upper bound on the approximation error, using calculus. I had paper and pencil, so I calculated our diagonals to the precision I felt we could measure. I wonder if my mother made me calculate the diagonals (instead of doing it herself) to make her point that I should remember it too. I suspect that my solving it (thereby ruining her lesson) with calculus (the only math she dreaded) probably pissed her off royally.
@MililaniVF (1/3) When I was 16, my mother was building a house in the middle of nowhere. To set cinderblocks for the foundation, we measured the sides and then the diagonals to verify the foundation was square. The diagonal needed to match the Pythagorean theorem, a^2 + b^2 = c^2. One day at the house site 10 miles from civilization, neither of us had a calculator. Despite being shown how by my mother more than once, I still cannot remember how to calculate square roots by hand.
@rey Hurrah!
@Fritillaria2 My grandmother had horses, so as you as you say months of rain and mud, I shudder for horse hooves.
Talk of chickens reminds me of this bird picture (sorry it's birdsite): https://twitter.com/Home_Halfway/status/934214455067578368
That's my stream of unconsciousness coming up with pictures that make me giggle.
@Fritillaria2 I grew up on a farm; our chickens never got sweaters, and always survived the winter in a chicken coop for shelter. I imagine the reality looks like chickens picking sweaters off of each other, especially once there are loose ends to pull.
@saradgore The best lesson I have learned (as an adult, wish I had started sooner) to improve my mental health is to minimize my time around toxic people. The choice can be difficult, but so far it's really worth it.
This lesson crystallized for me while reading http://www.flowerhorne.com/blog/2012/10/25/my-quakerism-will-be-feminist-and-anti-racist-or-it-will-be-bullshit/ when I realized that including jerks is not what inclusive means; tolerance works only when no harm is done to others.
Good luck and best wishes!
