I have enough gear that would mount in a 19-inch rack that it may be time to consider getting one.

On the 19-inch-with-ears side, I have a patch panel, 2 switches, and 2 servers - although one server frustrated @nivex today by not booting well, and the other server should be retired ... it has a floppy drive, folks, it should be retired.

Any suggestions or useful tips out there? Maybe @rey ?

@nethope @nivex racks are nice, i like them

whatcha looking to know about?

@rey @nivex Should I avoid or go with Brand X, avoid or go with Retailer Y? I've never done this outside of $work where there was always a history of "we get this one for that environment" (no choices on my part).

I've built a rack for $work in a floor-length dress (with pockets, thank goodness) using a Leatherman Micra because that's what I had on me that day (I do not leave home without some tools). But I've never picked one for home so I'm at a loss there.

@nivex @rey And I'd prefer not to pay as much as $work on racks! The metal shelves do the job for all except the patch panel. (But patch panels are essential. So is cable management.)

@nethope @nivex honestly idk... i've only bought one, and it was for the network at the house. :< it was also a shallow wall-mount thing.

clip-in nuts: good
hinged: ehh maybe
if wall-mounting, firmly attach some plywood to the wall, then attach the rack to that

@rey @nivex I haven't decided about wall mounting. Mounting to *something* sounds secure, and secure sounds good, but most of the racks I've worked with were free-standing - and too heavy to budge. The telco 2-post racks were bolted to the floor, but I'm not thrilled about lag bolts into my slab. Finishing the wall (unfinished mechanical room, not on HVAC, in basement) with some insulation and then plywood sounds reasonable.

Clip-in yes!

@nethope @rey @nivex I have to strongly rsecond clip-in. good ole square holes make everything easy.

also check out audio gear shops. a lot of audio gear is available in 19" (but also 23", so be careful), so they have a good selection of quarter/half height and portable units.
