i feel emotionally drained whenever i see a bio that's like "i'm a #fullstackdeveloper at Stripe" or whatever. be more interesting
the game theory rant would look even more unhinged with mastodon's 500 character limit, i bet. the barking pseudo-lolcat is-he-doing-a-bit-or-just-on-uppers style that relies on a character limit for what little rhetorical power it has would not survive even a few hundred more characters per segment. the illusion that he knows what he's talking about woukd be broken completely
don't @ me if you're not givin me a full 500 chars
this might be better in the long run! but it's best to also acknowledge this is going to lead to a SHIT ton of grief and chaos as users conflict with instance owners and people jump ship and accuse each other of being shitty allies and etc. this place is "social justice eats itself" central and it's going to be crazy
i love being an early adopter on social media because, for a brief moment, you're surrounded by like-minded travelers: tech journalists, developers, UX designers, armchair internet law activists, github jockeys - my people! i'm racist and classist
@Gargoylezoo The first few turns are critical. I suggest the MEMESIS research path in the early game; it's makes things much easier later on
INTRO TO FEDERATION:
1. "mastodon" is a piece of software that runs on a server. It's made of "code", or little spaghetti-like strings of information
2. An "instance dominatrix" can chew and swallow these code strands to create an "instance". Every stomach contains at least one server
3. Our gut bacteria populates the server, and can talk to, or battle, gut bacteria from other stomachs
4. The game of "mastodon" ends when your gut bacteria populates the entire universe. Go forth and conquer!
man it's a hot one, like seven inches from the mastodon, i'm sorry every body. i'm sorry
@jkb good points. it'll be interesting to see how things shake out!
@jkb maybe, true. but i wonder if, in practice, disconnecting an instance filled with 70% good people and 30% trash will be a controversial decision and there will be a lot of people angry with their instance hosts and jumping ship, and a ton of drama, etc. basically reddit-style drama in a twitter format
well, there's the clueless tech libertarian white dude mindset in a nutshell
@shivvi I agree with you that they're needed, but I'm not convinced they will fix the wider problems either. This entire model seems set up to encourage the kind of reddit poisoning-and-brigading shenanigans that I'd think no one sane would want to touch with a ten foot pole. i wonder if the creator being 25 is part of this... not quite knowing what he's in for...
i'm convinced this whole federation thing will be an absolute shitshow that will descend into highly insular, complex drama and anger, and at least in the abstract i'm 100% here for it
you: tweet
me, an intellectual: toot
Meet The Strange New Mastodon Instance That's Cosplaying As If They're On AOL In 1997
my parents discovered Mastodon and shamed me for my instance not being hip and weird enough
did everyone already make the joke about an app called Toot Suite. fine
i bet there's already porn of the mastodon mascot
it's extremely disorienting that you all use capital letters
can't wait til we get past the awkward phase where we all talk incessantly about the platform and instead talk incessantly about whatever bullshit trump said or did that day
