@tether @schlink @distelfliege What I wrote in my blog post about #DeleteFacebook, among other things, is that the difference is not only in how Mastodon treats data vs Facebook but also what data it even asks for in the first place - which is not a lot at all. No real names, no dates of birth, relationship statuses, workplaces, schools, geolocations - people dump so much personally identifiably information into Facebook just because it has profile fields that ask for it.

Today's lesson: Medium is bad. They've suspended our account and blocked access to all our published stories for bogus reasons and with only 12 hours notice.

What you should not forget is that: public posts are public, private posts may still be public if sent to dishonest servers, DMs are not protected by encryption and rely on both involved instance's honesty.
If you allow everyone to follow you your data may get mined just as on the commercial platforms.
If you have a commercial bot (in disguise) in your followers, it will see and mine those toots.
Just being a federation is no silver bullet to the privacy issue. But ou aren't the product anymore.

At some point I made a new Facebook account, which I still have. I have my reasons and I'm not ashamed. Shaming people for their social media use is the wrong way to go about it. Create alternatives, make it easier for people who do want to leave. But don't pressure people.

oh hey, all y'all coming in from the facebook badness: the reason facebook is bad is because capitalism, in case that wasn't clear.

All this talk that people should just #DeleteFacebook isn't very helpful IMO. For many people, getting off Facebook would massively harm their social lives. You can argue that this is bad (it is!), but it's reality.
Those people are still entitled to privacy and data protection!

If Eugen had been Yet Another Guy In Tech and not the good egg he's proven himself to be, Mastodon would have been dead in the water, and almost no one would know or care about federated social networks.

Some pre-Mastodon fediverse participants want credit, but as best as I can tell previous implementations were content to be obscure and inaccessible to a non-technical audience.

You can't live in your moat for years then get mad when gay witches and furries make something that's actually inviting to people who don't live and breath code.

I tried the previous thing. Nobody talked about stuff I was interested in. Sorry for not namedropping you when I talk about my new social media home but I only have 500 c

To be clear, I don't mind acknowledging GNUSocial's and its community's contributions, whatever they may be. What bothers me is, yet again, queer and PoC communities are not really getting much acknowledgement for their contributions in press and conversations outside Mastodon.

Mastodon owes its success to Eugen's patience and acceptance, and to the rainbow nerds who joined early.

Federated social media owes its newfound relevance to Mastodon. Let's not confuse the order of events.
