Another thing I learned this weekend: The devil was sometimes pictured as a toad in #Renaissance paintings. Here's the example I saw last Saturday: It's the “Enthroned Madonna and child with St. Ambrose and St. Michael” by Bramantino, in which the toad is lying on its back because the devil had been defeated by St. Michael.
