Some folks on birdsite are tagging our project account in tweets like "hey jack twitter should copy this thing mastodon does". The idea that this is merely about features is short-sighted. Twitter will never, ever, ever be your friend. They are the shareholders' friend, not yours. No feature will let you see what their engineers are working on, what's under the hood. No feature will fix their headquarters in the US following and enforcing US laws and customs worldwide.

Its sad how Wile E Coyote is remembered for his violence and not for his brilliantly realistic paintings of tunnels

Is there some place I can buy stickers in the shape of the Mastodon logo? Like, nice ones from Sticker Mule or something? If not, is there any reason I shouldn't order a run from them and then mail them to whoever wanted them for free?

Winter arrived. I spent a couple of days thinking I would die of cold before I remembered How To Do Winter. I found my stash of extra-warm socks, remembered about the warm PJs, and got serious about layering clothing before heading into the woods.

It is a bit pathetic that I need to re-learn this each year.

I have been telling myself that if life ever goes really wrong, at least I could live in the woods and be a wild thing.

Then winter comes along and smacks me upside the head. No, I could totally not do that. I would die of cold.

There is a woman here who steals used pumpkins. A few days after Hallowe'en, she drives to the place where we all put our jack o'lanterns, and takes many of them away.

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, it's good because she uses the pumpkins in her compost. On the other hand, I like seeing jack o'lanterns gradually wizen and collapse as frost slays them, and my dog likes to chew on them. So I wish she would leave them in place.

The first rule is that the dog must have her walk. It is because of this that I head out, with her, to the woods. Every single day.

I know that this time in the wild helps me to be happy and healthy.

I tell myself that I am so wise that I would go on these hikes even if I didn't have a dog. But just between us? That is a lie. I would fail and make excuses, if it were just me.

I had to wait for hours, in the mall, of all places. Malls are not for me, so I found some seats by a window and watched huge flakes of snow cover the earth.

Along came an old man, who told me tales of his childhood, and of what the world was like back in the days before mine.

I liked this man, and we had a long visit. I would never have connected with him had I not been waiting for the repair place to fix my car.

I should loiter more often, and visit with random old guys.

I'm fairly new to Mastodon. I thought I'd list a few of my interests as an , hoping that this will help me find like-minded people. Here goes:

Wooden Bog Butter Barrels are possibly the most beautiful things you can find in a bog.  But why did people throw their butter into bogs?

Despite the jurassic-sounding name, pteridomania (from the Greek for fern, plant and mania) was responsible for the 19th century fern leaf collector's job.
