@kai I'll reiterate: anyone who can't spend 10-15 minutes selecting an instance deserves 0 onboarding, and onboarding them would likely be a detriment

@kai (this is a pretty low value of "wtf they're doing" imo -- communication platforms like IRC that used to be pretty damn common require way more, and I still had no real trouble as a 13 y/o figuring out how to use them)

@kai I apologize for the tone -- it's just that things looking to maximize user count / "engagement" have been universally terrible IME and selecting for people who make a baseline effort helps. If people aren't thinking about who moderates their instance, their experience will probably end up suffering for it anyway, and -everyone- loses if you have a flood of people who don't know wtf they're doing

@kai @gargron It's maybe a 15 minute burden at most; if anything it's a good quality filter. What's difficult about it?

@cascode Ah. I tried The Dispossessed a couple nights ago and wasn't a huge fan, but I'll probably finish it eventually... PKD stuff I have similarly mixed feelings about, but I did read A Scanner Darkly in one night when I couldn't sleep once, lol.

The authors that have clicked the best for me have been Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Margaret Atwood, and Kazuo Ishiguro, which are probably pretty boring choices. I guess I enjoyed Norwegian Wood as well kinda

@cascode What sort of stuff do you read? I miss reading, but seems like the majority of what I try I end up not being able to stomach

The funny part is that w/ the kind of stuff I've been hearing from Tobago Tracks etc, I'd be completely unsurprised if those both appeared in one mix someone did

@KS I've seen people push this (complete with aspersions on anyone who disagrees) with ambiguously gendered human characters like Astolfo or whoever before too, and I just don't get it...
