Things I won't miss from the bird place: Nazis, political bots, threads, #brands, nested quoted tweets that don't pay off when you get to the bottom, institutional accounts that exist for PR without thinking about what content a follower wants to see, accounts that tweet with so many abbreviations and hashtags that you can't derive sense from it, brands that tweet the same content multiple times per day, being forced to make grammatical errors to fit in 140 characters, and oh yeah, Donald Trump.
is it true that mastodon is actually a psyop created by hover and namecheap to spur people into paying crazy prices for hip domain names such as "balls.hypno.gongle.sigil", "godzone.fuck" and "will.i.am.shitner"

My new theory, developed from staying at a beachside resort the last few days, is that the entire prequel trilogy was developed so that Lucas could author filibuster about how annoying sand is, and that he was right to do so.

Hey who is an indie game dev? Basically the main thing I got out of bird website is just admiring people's screenshots of wips. Star this if you make indie games (incl Twine games! Don't need to be screenshots it's all good) and I'll follow ya. 🙏
@Secstodon @Elex @neon Yeah my point exactly! If your elevator pitch includes a parenthetical "well actually its not x itself, it's a kind of relative of x but with y difference, based on z which was made by a" you have lost your audience before you've begun. Maybe there's a reason GNU Social is only catching on now after seven years.

@Elex @neon I guess... but at what point do you cut that off? Like do we also need to explain that GNU Social itself runs on HTTP/S? I mean... obviously that's an extremely shit slippery slope argument I've just made there, but my point is pretty much all shiny new tech is built on slightly older tech, especially in OSS.
There are entire newsrooms full of reporters who *just* got the hang of saying "tweets" without it sounding ridiculous. They have no idea what's coming
@neon I think it's just that "GNU" is, for whatever reason and for better or worse, basically marketing poison for non-techies. It's like, acetylsalicylic acid vs aspirin I think?
@cristina right! I am already missing the thrill of going through a joke and changing words to shorter synonyms to get exactly 140. Well... not missing, exactly. It was satisfying in the same way that vacuuming up a bunch of audible grit is: good but you'd still prefer the grit weren't there in the first place.
