twitter, censorship, distributed web
Seeing an uptick in interest in distributed/self-hosted projects, mainly from asshats who've been kicked off Twitter et al.
I don't like the idea of a few companies controlling who access the discourse, but I really don't want to lose the fediverse as "where shitheads hang out to circumvent terms of service". This sucks.

@mattdsteele I'm assuming you saw the chat from last night?

@gabek Yeah that guy's an example of it, though I think establishing and enforcing a CoC can be done at a project level. I'd be in favor of a warning, then a boot from chat if it continues.
I'm more broadly bummed that indieweb/self-hosted stuff is going to get tarred as "what you run when Twitter/etc kicks you off"

@mattdsteele @gabek federation has always been both. Havens for people I support, and (blocked) havens of assholes. I prefer local control, choice, over corporate centralized gatekeepers. So do people I hate. This is a feature not a bug. Want to talk about it on my podcast? :)

@mattdsteele @gabek heh more evidence(?) that de-platforming works?
"But some complained to me that using Gab was pointless. Elliot Kline, then head of the now-defunct group Identity Evropa, told me there were no journalists on Gab. They couldn't use it to spread their message outside the echo chamber."

@mattdsteele yeah, the various not-shitty platforms gotta keep up with defederating from the shitty ones I guess :/
