Today walking down S. Francisco street a girl randomly offered me marijuana and it was AWKWARD.

But, with that street name, I should have seen that coming.

@SuzanEraslan thank you so much, suzan! yes, it is a struggle sometimes. I majored in linguistics and literature in portuguese language and it is also very hard for me to convince people that it is not an obsolete subject at all.

my audience will be three or four specialists in education/professors of literature – this lecture is the final phase of an examination process to teach in a public university center in brazil. I have 1 hour to talk about this topic and how I'd put it into practice.

I have to give a lecture tomorrow on the importance of reading for any professional. Do you guys have any thoughts on that?

a well-read man will at once begin to yawn with boredom when one speaks to him of a new “good book,” because he imagines a sort of composite of all the good books that he has read, whereas a good book is something special, something unforeseeable, and is made up not of the sum of all previous masterpieces but of something which the most thorough assimilation would not enable him to discover.

The love of the beauty of the world involves the love of all the truly precious things that bad fortune can destroy. The truly precious things are those forming ladders reaching to- ward the beauty of the world, openings onto it. (Simone Weil)

To misstate, or even merely understate, the relation of the universities to beauty is one kind of error that can be made. A university is among the precious things that can be destroyed. (Elaine Scarry)
