I am following the news of the crumbling US empire with some morbid interest, but the sinking doubt that is reinforced in my mind throughout has been: what next? If the impeachment that appears imminent comes to pass, under what conditions are new elections to occur? The lie at the heart of the democracy seems quite bare.

@lorax Unfortunately the US government was not setup to handle a new election in the case of such corruption. In other words, if impeachment occurs the next person in line takes office and we don't have a say until 2020.

@thomnottom What if the next person in line is a member of the same criminal conspiracy that led to the impeachment of the first guy?

@lorax He may get impeached and it moves to the next person (who just so happens to be from the same party).

It made sense at a time when it was assumed impeachment would be for removing a single bad actor. But after 240+ years we've finally hit upon its major failings. There is no way to deal with an entire complicit party, and there is no easy undo button for the damage caused in the meantime.
