Discussed wealth inequality and social stratification from a functionalist and conflict theory perspective with 18 year olds in a sociology class this evening.
I tried, Karl. I was definitely rusty. But I tried.
Had a 3 hour screening for OCD this morning. One of the best treatment centers in the world. Accepted for treatment, now on a 6 week waiting list to start.
Super weird way to spend a Monday morning, tbh.
Please keep in mind that not everyone is in a privileged enough position to be able to delete Facebook or Twitter, that they need it for staying connected with their network etc.
However, you can still encourage them to start building a new network here, and you can help them by recommending them directly to an instance you think would fit them!
Was thinking about it last night, and decided I’m gonna whip up a page on my site to record the books I read and books that folks have recommended and are on the list to purchase. Will be nice to have a place to store links and do some data analysis wankery.
Day 10 of adding Lexapro to Wellbutrin. It is not the most pleasant of titration on-ramps. Optimistic that the week will provide improvement and increased calm / clarity.
Here's a photo of our senior age Italian Greyhound (named Dennis) attempting to merge entirely with his bed.
Made some good progress today on the new website. A lot more to do for design, and content, but progress!
Done with website work for tonight and just remembered I have to write a paper for class which is due TOMORROW. Ugh.
Lemme tell ya, taking an Intro to #Sociology class at an Ivy as a 34 year old is interesting. The kids have a very different lens than me and my peers, at that age.
Cook dinner, keep the laundry going, write the paper. Stay focused.
How it feels like talking about Mastodon on Reddit
General request: if you post pictures, please please include alt text describing the image so that everyone, regardless of visual ability, can enjoy your toot.
Please consider asking others to do this. Optionally, reconsider boosting toots if they don't have alt text.
We all have an opportunity to help shape the culture of this place and I'd love, love, love if it were "oh, everyone posts alt text with their images because that's just what you do."
The professor who teaches the Harvard CS50 course is kind of awesome. High energy, clear and direct, easy to understand. Digging the videos.

I have no #hottakes but I will say that I stopped using Facebook on January 1 as a "break" and then actually clicked delete after the #CamAnal story broke, and I regret nothing. Feels so good! #DeleteFacebook #EmbraceMastodon
Really, asking "what should replace Facebook" is putting things the wrong way around.
A more interesting way to ask the question is, "what did Facebook replace."
People used to build their own websites. People used to have blogs. People used USENET which was truly distributed and un-censorable.
Facebook and Google took the open internet and open standards and monetized and made everything crappy. Enough of that. Nothing should replace Facebook, it's done, stick a fork in it.
Reading the recent #metafilter thread on #CoSo / #Mastodon and have to say this comment speaks to me the most:
"Right now Mastodon is just 'like [#birdsite] but not quite as good a product, with fewer people'.

Of course I only realize that there is a (in my defense, somewhat obfuscated) option to add accessibility descriptions to individual photos. Mea culpa, and will remember to do that in future. Off to a great start! /hamburger/
Bye bye Facebook (and probably Twitter, soon) and hello Mastodon!
I hate first posts cause the pressure feels real so instead here's a photo of a necklace I made a couple weeks ago.
