@deadsuperhero First, look up a psychologist, not a therapist.  No, really - a therapist can be someone with a 1 year liberal arts degree, they're not someone you want with any significant mental problems.  I would actually recommend speaking with your general practitioner the next time you see them as they will have an idea of the specialists in your area and who would be best equipped to help you.

This is heavily dependent on your locality, but generally in the US (I'm familiar most with California) a psychotherapist is at least a master's degree holder and is licensed after many thousands of hours of supervised clinical experience. And typically in my experience GPs are severely lacking in any good understanding of therapy or psychiatry (why would they be?) and are thus not usually the best source for a referral.
