In my heart I know that the philosophy behind having a federation of Mastodon 'instances' is a good one, but even after reading about how it works, I'm still a little uneasy knowing that an instance can just go under. I'm already bad enough about keeping in touch with friends.
@Trashbang At least this was you have a choice. Consider Vine. No options, gone forever because it didn't make money.
At worst, if you're really unsure, you could run your own Mastodon instance.
There's currently no easy way to move accounts, but I believe it's on the wishlist.
