Go home Mac, you're drunk
I'm confused...
Over lunch I tried to promote Mastodon with colleagues and got mocked ...
-That sounds like a disease!
-Masterdon? Sounds awful!
-What? Masturbon?
Filter bars are cool:

CW's are a good thing. It's a nice way to say "hey, I'm talking about something heavy/controversial/triggery/NSFW - take care reading it or don't"
I've seen 2 people argue that current events are too important to hide behind a CW - that THEY would want to read those posts... well ok - click that button, go for it!
But not everyone feels that way...it's just a common courtesy, is it really so hard to make use of the CW?
I will just never understand how "Click the tiny fucking CW button and mention you're talking about current events so your don't trigger PTSD or anxiety attacks in random people" is a goddamn divisive issue.
Just fucking CW your politics posts or go back to fucking twitter.
Seriously can we please go back to tagging politics because I am so tired and I don't want this to turn into Twitter where you log in and it's 50 posts about what the fuck some republican did last
@NattyGov A bit of talk here about moderation and about how federation decisions can quarantine larger jerk outbreaks:
For those who dont know, the federated timeline displays all the activity from all the people on other instances who are followed by people on your instance.
--
It is therefore very good practice to follow as many interesting people from other instances as possible. We are the ropes binding this distributed system together.
Gooooood morning ๐
me when i joined mastodon yesterday vs me now https://mastodon.xyz/media/-tENWl5s3e-sGGXv3sE https://mastodon.xyz/media/ww8tlTLzdnJ8U56TuFw
Ultimately Mastodon's killer feature is that it's a public good that someone built because they thought it needed to exist and not a startup someone built because they wanted to get rich quick selling other people's data.
I wish I came up with that myself
@terrana hi how much time did it take you to set up your instance? I'd find it interesting to do too, but I'm afraid I wouldn't have time to keep it up.
Ceci ...
INTRO TO FEDERATION:
1. "mastodon" is a piece of software that runs on a server. There's a lot of servers that run it & u can follow ppl on other servers.
2. When u follow someone from another server, your server receives their toots.
3. The federated TL is all public toots that the server receives, ie all of the toots from everyone that ppl on your server follow.
4. ERGO: if u want to see more toots in the fed TL, follow + get other ppl on your server to follow ppl from other servers!
@CobaltVelvet you're probably very busy, but maybe you can take a look at this.
I'm trying to follow someone at mastodon.technology, but then something goes wrong.
@skroo yea that happens when you follow people. The federated timeline is basically a timeline made of everyone on the instance's followings. And if someone on another server follows you, you appear on their federated timeline.
Dear people of Octodon, please forgive my ignorance - I only signed up here because it is big, up and is described as cute - but what makes Octodon good?
So if the instance with my account goes down, there is no way to get to my toots and following list until it's up again? Right?
