The Surface Laptop looks nice, but maybe before pulling this Windows 10 S stunt, Microsoft should focus on the fact that nearly everything in their app store is hot garbage.

@kirkman I honestly forgot they had an app store. I haven't opened it since windows 8.1 because why the fuck does anyone need to?

@Mainebot At least devs can put Win32 applications in the store now, but that isn't going to help the average Jane who wants a cheap computer and perhaps needs to run a specific program for a class or something.

@kirkman I just googled windows 10 S and oh my god what a fantastically bad idea. Can I just install Windows 10 on it instead?

I think CHrome OS is a stupid move too. I want a general-purpose computer that can run what I want on it, not exist solely through walled garden marketplaces.

@Mainebot Yeah, this is x86_64 hardware, so you can install whatever edition of Windows you want (or upgrade S to Pro in the store).

I own a Chromebook and it's super nice for when I don't need to carry anything powerful. It has RDP and SSH apps and supports the VPN we use at work... so it fits a lot of my working needs.

@kirkman If the hardware and the tools fit the job, there's no problem. I don't really know what tools I'm going to need from day to day, so I tend to favor platforms that are a bit more multipurpose.

Also, ideologically, walled gardens are expensive prisons more than places that nurture forward-thinking development and new ideas. I hated it when Apple did it. Still do.
