The "rural areas" argument is bullshit, but social networks did expose speech from social circles you wouldn't have been in contact with at all before Internet. Also people are getting more racist as a result of the 2008 financial crisis and politicians exploiting foreigners as scapegoats.
@kingu_platypus_gidora it was obviously better when the only who had access to the internet were the liberal elite with college degrees.
