Hello, Octodon!

I am also @kevinja. I created an account here because the Shop is very writer-y and I wish to spare them from my more obscure geekery.

I'm a by day ( [i know, eww...], , , just enough knowledge to be dangerous). I do some and when I can. I even make some, but I'm better at consuming and mimicking it.

If there's one lesson I've learned from working on this demon-haunted codebase, it's *don't* modernize your tooling unless you're actually prepared to commit to hunting down and completely decommissioning whatever you're replacing.

Also, really genuinely consider whether you need a tool to generate a config file from your codebase, or whether maaaaaybe it will actually be easier in the longrun to just maintain a config file.

We have a problem Houston.

"In a country where public education is cruelly underfunded, there’s no mystery as to why teachers and districts are drawn to #Google's cheap, often free, #education technology and curriculum, but there needs to be an honest reckoning of its real price tag and robust public discussion about whether that is a cost worth paying."

Can someone explain to me *why* we can perceive emotion in music? It's all kind of magical to me how music really is a universal language. (Erm, it is, right?) We can all recognise a happy tune, a tense tune, an aggressive one, and perhaps a contemplative or serene tune.

Why is that?

So... what are they trying to say? Do they know something I don't know?

I wrote a small thing on Janelle Monáe's and concept art:

I'm a sucker for this sort of thing, especially dystopians. If you have an hour to watch it, it's worth your time.

Our shop was mandated to go SSL-only for our web traffic by upper management. So, our ops guys just shut off port 80 with no redirect when they implemented it.

Now, it takes a timeout to realize that our already slow web traffic isn't coming because I forgot the https:// in front.

When it does load, we get warnings because all the certs are self-signed, and don't match the wildcards.

I feel more secure now. :)

I'm sure this is fine, and that this startup out of the UAE will only do responsible and philanthropic things with these zero-days that they're paying seven figures for.
