"We take the existence of borders for granted simply because weโ€™ve always been told they are real, and the borders with our neighbors have remained unchanged during our lifetimes.

In reality, they are not real. In fact, while I can say with all certainty this will not happen in the foreseeable future, it is entirely possible that all of the borders dividing all of the countries all over this world could be erased in a single day.

In a sense, we are hostages of the countries in which we are born, held captive by artificial borders. We are not asked if we would like to be a citizen of the nation in which weโ€™re born."

I write open source software because:
- I enjoy programming,
- I need/want a particular thing to exist,
- once I have written it, I might as well share it,
- maybe someone will even find a bug or pick it up and maintain it.
And not because:
- I want anyone to make money on it,
- I want to defend anyone from anything,
- I want to be rich and famous.
Just think about it like playing an instrument โ€” it's fun to do, and even better when done together. But I don't sell albums.

Thanks so much to @wizard for translating my essay on why free software needs free tools into Chinese!

This writeup of my #LibrePlanet2018 keynote on BoingBoing is more eloquent and concise than the talk. Thanks to Cory for the awesome summary, reflections, and signal boost! boingboing.net/2018/06/21/digi

Families often avoid conflict by not talking about politics and religion at the dinner table. Facebook is like being at the dinner table 24x7, except that it's designed so that you forget your entire family is there. It's also designed to make you angry and get you to talk about politics and religion. In other words, Facebook is designed to provoke conflict in families, which has torn many families apart that might otherwise still be able to tolerate one another.

Would you use the same words for somebody who plays the flute, dances, does some woodworking or soldering on weekends? It feels very weird when people use these words for my hobby. It feels like capitalism is coming and turning values into profits, trying to lure me into betraying the things I love. Donโ€™t fall for it. Keep love and money separate. Keep the words separate.

Itโ€™s hard to argue about the utility of something that gives you joy. It truly is. How to sell it and not cheapen it? I donโ€™t know. I added some emoji:

Any users out there using the Bitlbee Mastodon plugin? I have some news: 1. I'm trying to move stuff away from GitHub so ticket list and repo URL can be found here: alexschroeder.ch/software/Bitl 2. create a new clone or add a new remote or change the url of that upstream remote you have and fetch; then switch to the 'develop' branch 3. give it a whirl: mentions in replies should work, now; and two new commands: bio and pinned.

Happy summer solstice/midsummer/thusday/whatever you call it. Afaik it can be a different days in other cultures so I may be out by a day or two.

Anyway:
It's the longest day of the year,
it is beautifully sunny and not too hot yet,
I am feeling great
and all is well with the world

Developing a bot that posts once a day has led to a strange dynamic where I will test the bot locally, see whether the output matches what I expect, but it doesn't actually post, and then I wait until 8:52 (one minut from now) to see whether it actually work.

Britpol, but actually USpol could do with some of this.

"... I was fired. There was nothing my manager could do about it. There was nothing the director could do about it. They stood powerless as I packed my stuff and left the building.

Over the next 3 weeks, I was CCed on the emails about my case. I watched it be escalated to bigger and more powerful titles over and over, yet no one could do anything about it ..."

And remember that the simplest and safest form of piracy is also the oldest: share with your friends.

With and passing, I'm starting to get the feeling that I can't cheer the copyright industry into their graves fast enough. Sink, all ye ships of publishing houses! Sink, ye newspapers, TV makers and whatever you call yourselves! I'm hoping your industry goes down, your money well dry up, your wealth is squandered at court, your patience tried, your reputation ruined, may your intellectual property turn to dust into your hands and may you choke on it.
