Being followed by a faceless and silent avatar is creepy.
Here’s my suggestion for newbies: set a picture and write at least one, preferably four posts that tell us something about yourself, about what to expect.
If you follow me, I will look at your profile and maybe I’ll follow back. But I’m not following a faceless and silent avatar.
Now... how to get this message out to newbies... 🤔

@kensanata I pinned a similar toot to my profile. I assume that at least some look at the profile before following. I got some follow requests from "people" nevertheless abd for some I'm pretty convinced they're bots.

@kensanata well my avatar is actually my eye so I'm not sure that counts :)

Some people don't use real faces/names. I understand the trust (or creepy) issues that can come with it. Some or legitimate, some are not.

@kensanata I send them a DM where I briefly explain my policy (basically, avoiding bot followers) and ask them for a reply where they describe themselves. If I ever get one, I accept the follow request.

@kensanata I'll help! don't know if newbies will see it but you never know

I am active and like to toot my thoughts. But as far as dispic are concerned, I like the anonymity offered by Mastodon.

(Besides the grey default pachyderm is cute.)

Am a newbie here.

@kensanata not sure if I'm tempted to delete my posts and creep for fun or if this motivates me to draw a profile pic faster (because you do kind of have a point)
