Google people listen to private recordings from around your house – to me this is obvious: there will be times when you unintentionally say the hot word or something like it and it will start recording. On my iPhone I can start playback by pressing a button on the headphones. Half the time Siri starts up even though I disabled it. All those seconds are getting sent to Apple, surely. There, it sounds like garbage so every now and then somebody will have to check whether it is Swiss German or not.

Also, let me say this: the webpages of the independent are shite! Half the page on my phone was covered by a video that didn’t scroll off and that I couldn’t immediately close. Uuuugh. Ads nosed with the content, multiple times. A battered face right in the middle of it all. Nope nope nope. 👎

@kensanata Id say Business Insider is worse. It redirects with stubbornness of a maniac from US version to regional without noticing that in that version the article don't exist, just to show me a 404 page telling me that.

@mcevnon Haha, the person working on content negotiation was so excited about the feature they added it without wondering whether anybody else was ready!

@syme Do you have a link to some source saying that this is happening without plausible deniability? I mean, it’s possible. But they would never admit it and I’m not going to accuse them of it unless I have some good Snowden-level evidence. Except TVs, of course:

I Don't. I do have a tendency to assume the worst is all. I purposefully didn't include any companies name to avoid the "false accusation" but I would be surprised if the DIDN'T abuse the technology

@syme I mean, I've heard unofficially that the employees of a Swiss phone company used to listen in to phone conversations for the laughs every now and then...

@zalandocalrissian I have no idea. Probably not? There are a few companies that do Swiss German speech to text translation, though. A funny anecdote, probably not true: a US agent once complained in Geneva to a colleague: why couldn’t they use high German in their conversations, the US secret services had trouble understanding them…

I’m very suspicious of my television, which uses Android, probably from the ISP’s box, and suspect it’s recording us all the time, probably watching me in my underwear too.

@wion Luckily I still have a dumb TV. I don’t think I’d give my TV Internet access.

If I had my way, we wouldn’t have a TV at all. I hate the damn things. But it’s out of my jurisdiction.

@kensanata the only mitigation I've found to this problem is Lineage OS (android) on OnePlus with no google services and my own vpn on all the time. It went very well for 2 years but now I'm starting having troubles because more and more developers rely on the damn Google Play service.
However, still usable with some down sides which I consider better than giving away my soul
