@gargron I just saw this on joinmastodon.org: «Without an incentive to sell you things, Mastodon allows you to consume content you enjoy uninterrupted.» I wondered whether we can change “consume content you enjoy” to something more human like “read posts you enjoy”. Or “see the things you enjoy: posts, pictures, videos, comments, it’s all there.”

@hinterwaeldler @kensanata @Gargron I'd agree with that. Consume does sound very commercial.

@ignitionigel @hinterwaeldler @gargron to me, consuming sounds like eating or burning – once something is consumed, it is gone. None of which I associate with reading and writing.

@kensanata I think the 'uninterrupted' is targeting to the interuptions in the timeline with advertizing, you have missed... on birdside. So this may be kept... feel free to sugggest... @ignitionigel @hinterwaeldler @Gargron

@eladhen @gargron I don't know. "Content" sounds like the filler I get in bad newspaper. It's the soulless stuff written not because you care but because you must. I really don't like the word content.

@Gargron @eladhen

@kensanata is 100% right. No content. No consumption. We are having conversations here. And many if not most a true creators.

Maciej Cegłowski has an excellent description of the problem:

@saper Maciej Cegłowski’s blog posts/talks are great and this one is, too!

@kensanata looks like there are a couple of new ones I need to read/see!

@kensanata @eladhen @Gargron Reminds me if the intro to Cory Doctorow's book "Content". '"Content," huh? Ha! Where's the container?'.

I'm fairly convinced that 'content' is what the media industries call the work of artists, perhaps because they think of the masses as consumers of it. I 100% agree that neither notion captures the independent spirit that's drawn me to Mastodon.

@lupine Sounds like the soundtrack of a zombie movie! 🧟‍♂️
