Social media was a mistake. Let's revert to web 1.0: forums, blogs and email newsletters. I'm only half joking.

@ink_slinger I was all nostalgic for mIRC a couple days ago. I want the platforms to revert to that era.

@OmnaBrain @ink_slinger those platforms never went away. People just stopped joining them. Also, there are newer apps with #OldSchool UI like Mumble. I don't really see this as a useful features myself but ...

@strypey @OmnaBrain Oh, of course. And I still try to use them. It's just so easy to fall into the lazy option of posting a hot take on social rather than taking the time to craft a proper blog post.

I used to blog a lot. I've do so far less since the popularity of social media. (Though, since mostly dropping Facebook, I do blog a little more frequently.)

@ink_slinger @OmnaBrain I do a mix of blogging and micro-blogging. I don't have any metrics, but I feel like I've got more folks reading my blog posts since I started promoting them on the #fediverse (and on the birdsite via bridges from here to there). Micro-blogging is good for things like quick questions, useful links, and shower thoughts. Blogs are good for things that don't fit into 140-500 characters

@strypey @OmnaBrain I agree. I also use microblogging services to promote my "normal" blog posts, so they compliment one another in that sense.

I've tried to get in a mindset of writing a blog post if it's going to take more than 1-2 toots to express a thought. I can always share the link on here afterwards. The trick is actually remembering to stick to that.

@ink_slinger @OmnaBrain @strypey my take has been to post stuff here and if I end up more – stuff I’d like to keep – I edit all my toots on the topic and turn them into a semi-coherent blog post.

@kensanata @ink_slinger @strypey That seems like a good way to dig some more value out of tooting. Rather than just slinging thoughts out into the void, you can nurture them and find some hidden value you otherwise would miss.

@OmnaBrain @kensanata @ink_slinger true that. It's a good way of throwing out a quick draft, without getting preoccupied with re-editing earlier bits, or mucking about with formatting. Might even be a good way to draft fiction ...

Alex Schroeder 🐝 @kensanata

@strypey @OmnaBrain @ink_slinger I sort of got into the idea of using toots as drafts because I think an archive needs to be selective so I didn’t just want to republish all my toots in my blog, and because I had seen @ajroach42 post tootstorms and then rewriting them as a blog post.

@kensanata @ink_slinger @OmnaBrain @strypey it works pretty well.

I gather my thoughts here, and then edit and refine there.
