I'd love to find more Fediverse people in . Anybody?

I guess I'm interested in meeting people, talking about local politics and events, possibly going to the movies together, that kind of thing. But I'll have to think about a way to organize on Mastodon. Would that be a separate account with a focus? How do you do it, if you're also interested in local stuff? Did you just set up an instance for local stuff?

@kensanata I always have a pane open to the hashtag for my city, which gets some but not all of the local events Mastodonites are hosting, and advertising that seems spammy to me, and local politics.

How would you use a city-specific instance? I've been wondering if setting one up as an alternative listserv/irc/slack would be practical, or if having to log into it with a separate persona would be too annoying. (If no separate persona, what gain?)

@clew not sure how I’d use a city specific instance. I’d probably talk about city politics and city events? Invite people to this or that activity? I mean, it hardly makes sense for me to tell the world about me visiting a certain museum when only two or three followers would ever be able to join.

@kensanata I'm thinking about how, as a mastodon client, logging in and out of various specialized instances would be useful/distracting/annoying. (Maybe everyone does that more than me?)

If the definition of Unlisted were slightly different, you could post things only to followers of the tag. Maybe that's worth suggesting!

@clew Yeah. People have been suggesting the groups feature from GNU Social but I think that’s not going anywhere I think, based on what I read on that issue.
