I missed the actual day, but: This week, 170 years ago, the National Assembly in Frankfurt opened its initial session. This was the first freely elected parliament in German history, and also the first step towards establishing an actual Germany.
Here's to the revolutionaries of 1848, and to the endurance of their ideals.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: This should be a national holiday.
