Writing as an artistic outlet: Does it count if nobody but you ever reads your stuff?

When you paint, or draw, or even make music to an extent, the investment you ask of your patrons is small. A glance in your direction and you're in the club.

Writing to be read requires audience investment. What do you do if you just like to write? What if you won't or can't market yourself? Just accept that your voice is destined for oblivion? How do you motivate for that?
