Stuck in a terminal with a weird prompt -- exit, quit, bye, ctrl-x, ctrl-c, Q, X -- oh for crying out loud!
Open new terminal -- killall <weird software I will never run again!>
@starbreaker 😆 It was tclsh on an old AIX machine.
Perhaps ironically, vim is my preferred editor.
@juno I think I see where you went wrong. tclsh isn't an editor. It's a kind of shell based on tcl (tool control language) as in TCL/TK.

My takeaway from all this was to never assume 100% compatibility between modern Linux and some ancient UNIX variant.
