Piece of advice from someone experienced with federated social networks:
*Every instance will have it's own rules and communities. Check that first to see if it's for you and respect those rules.
*Not every instance connects with all of them. Check that too.
*Some instances will have technical limits, mostly because they're run voluntarily or made for small groups. If you can, support the admins.
*You can find information about the above on home/sign up/faq pages. Read first.
*Be kind and enjoy!
So is there actually a way to post ONLY to the local timeline for this instance? It looks like unlisted doesn't do that and public posts here and to the fed...?

STILL not in bed.
OK, fuck this. I REALLY need to go to bed. A demain Octodon.
I love all the hot-takes on "federation is too complicated for normies" meanwhile the whole entertainment industry feels threatened by BitTorrent. Not to say the federation here will see the same success - but it's a trade off between effort & reward and I think Mastodon moved the needle on the equation
It's been a while since I stayed up just staring at a load of strangers scrolling by on a timeline.
@petefrasermusic FOUND YOU!
Why do I have a conference call at midnight? WHY?
Amoroq client badly needs to let us manage instances
. @CobaltVelvet This is why this is my favourite instance.

I've just read the instructions for setting up your own Mastodon instance, and now I know why I will never be able to set up my own Mastodon instance.
So here's a thing social media is good for. I've just met @Idoubtit and discovered her sites http://doubtfulnews.com and http://spookygeology.com which are awesome resources for anyone interested in or involved with mysteries/hauntings/strange phenomena etc. Go check them out!
@Idoubtit No idea how I've never come across your sites before, but they look awesome!
I guess part of the issue is that so many of us are new here and we're talking like we just arrived at the party. Being on Mastodon, discussing Mastodon is the equivalent of "wow, nice place, good weather for it, put your coats upstairs". The real test of the thing is when we all settle in and start talking about other stuff.
Still trying to figure out where to base myself. Within Mastodon or outside in GNU Social? I've just stumbled onto Octodon and it seems like you have a bunch of good people here. But what is the criteria one should apply in finding a place to settle? Does it even matter?
