I think, as noted elsewhere, that "tooting" is the real problem here. Just can't see it catching on. And I know "tweeting" is almost as silly but why seek to emulate it? What's wrong with "posting"? At least the French have pouet.

Hmm, hivemind, is there a way to toot to the instance timeline but not the federated timeline? I know I can go unlisted, but doesn't that hide from the instance timeline too?

Morning Octodon... Is a phrase that makes me feel like I just leapt several tall buildings at a single bound to land right in front of Octodon as he and his henchmen were in the process of making a getaway from a bank robbery, bags of swag over their shoulders.
Piece of advice from someone experienced with federated social networks:
*Every instance will have it's own rules and communities. Check that first to see if it's for you and respect those rules.
*Not every instance connects with all of them. Check that too.
*Some instances will have technical limits, mostly because they're run voluntarily or made for small groups. If you can, support the admins.

I love all the hot-takes on "federation is too complicated for normies" meanwhile the whole entertainment industry feels threatened by BitTorrent. Not to say the federation here will see the same success - but it's a trade off between effort & reward and I think Mastodon moved the needle on the equation
