Companies like Apple are entirely motivated by profit. Anything they say about helping advance human rights is just good PR while they happily axe freedoms and increase surveillance to pad out their bottom line.

Same goes with massive companies supporting minority groups or oppressed people. None of them ever come forward when it's unpopular but as soon as public support and awareness rises they're all for kicking other groups out of Mardi Gras so they can get a float.

My main fashion instinct is "dress like a protagonist", which is great since that can mean either "get a cool jacket and build a stylish ensemble around it" or "throw on whatever absurd bullshit gives me the best spread of stat bonuses"

yo did AWS do anything to improve CloudFront invalidations in the last 9 months? they speedy af now

@tqft I think that's a different issue to the one in my link, but I saw that going around on the Twitter and it's pretty fraked too. 2018 is off to such a good start, security-wise ๐Ÿ™„

@polychrome yeah, AFAIK autofilling stops it and adblocking will prevent those scripts from being loaded too.

AUGMENTED Reality? No these are Alternate Reality goggles, when you put them on you have to go join the resistance against mecha-Hitler.

Don't be this guy. Scraping Instagram to use people's selfies without permission for machine learning is gross. kndrck.co/indexing-faces-on-in

HOLY SHIT I HAVE OWNED ONE FOR TEN YEARS AND ONLY JUST REALISED RAZER NAMES ALL THEIR MICE AFTER SNAKES BECAUSE THEY EAT THE COMPETITION. *facepalm*

@jason Maybe it was someone else, but I'd heard they might be getting into the chat/social space as well?

@jason It definitely looks like a step in a more usable direction than PGP/GPG, but it's still got a long way to go before it's ready for lay-person use.

Latest version of FreeNAS (9.10.2) won't allow you to start the Samba service (Windows CIFS/SMB shares).

Turns out the default permissions are set wrong on the socket file, so go to the terminal client in the right-hand menu and type:

chmod 700 /var/db/samba4/private/msg.sock

Now you can enable it.

The worst of which put all the feedback in a database and then ran a cron script every minute which would extract the feedback and individually mail each one to the "customer feedback" list.

This is for an app that was going to receive feedback on average once each week.

Today at work I encountered a fifth "contact us" system in a single codebase. Previously I'd worked to remove three others because why do you need 5 separate backend methods of supplying user feedback!?

Also I can't even really point to the "Don't Repeat Yourself (DRY)" principle because the author of this code wrote each one individually using entirely different methods.

Mother's Day high tea was wonderful, good to see Mum again even if there was some scuffles over the best desserts. octodon.social/media/zN0vV8g1B

@theoutrider I thought this gross crap was only happening in Australia. :( It's absolutely repulsive to see the continued growth of gendering in products aimed at kids.

Feel good reminder time:

The path you came up in your profession isn't shared by all your colleagues.

For example, you may have spent lots of time on ISP help desk before ever getting into web development.

*You* might have learned how to subnet IPv4 addresses in your profession but the data science colleague you admire could have no idea.

Skills you didn't think you'd use again can come in handy at the strangest of times so always be proud of what you know and don't assume its common knowhow

@Sieo I'm mostly trying to learn Spanish at the moment, but I'm happy just to chat in English with you if you want to keep working on it?
