Once, in middle school, I was reciting a the Gettysburg Address (the teacher was notorious for making all his students do this), and I was given this piece of criticism:
“You have a great speaking voice, but you clearly did not study.”

For a long time I thought memorizing the Gettysburg Address was just something everyone did, and then once I quoted the whole first paragraph of it to a friend and she was like “who tf knows that much of the Gettysburg Address”
