If religion is about describing what's real then we don't so much need it because we have science which does that better. But if it's about constructing a preferred reality, one where those similar to us are favored and those dissimilar are excluded, well then. It's working perfectly.
@Skywise Religion is man made thing which separates believers from their common sense. I'm christian and I don't need church to believe in higher power and don't need them to tell me what should I do, because most of the rules they preach are not words from smart entity, they made them up themselves. Christianity and other religions are simple: if you want divine reward after your death don't be a dick, love and let others live their lives. This is nutshell, everything else is made up.
