Actually not totally clear. This must search the federated tweets? I guess it could search the whole network but seems unlikely.

From the faq: I don’t get the local vs. federated timeline thing.

“Local” toots are from the server you signed up at. “Federated” are the all the toots your server knows about. (It's complicated, but short version is: “toots from people that you and other locals follow.”)

Hmm now I added too many columns. I think I would prefer if the main column was fixed and couldn't be scrolled off the screen, but I also might be doing something wrong.

So... how do I explore Mastodon effectively? I guess I can try search and see what people are talking about. I can follow profiles. Does federation mean I can search across instances? Can I add a tab of activity on another instance? Can I explore instances without registering new accounts?
