#newinstance #instances Hey everyone, creativity.cafe is here! It's an instance for artists and creators of any kind - painters, glitch artists, musicians, writers, sculptors, whatever! And even just enthusiasts. If you're into art-y things and want to hang with other people who are too, come join us!

It's invite-only to keep it nice and cozy, but getting an invite is easy - just DM me what handle and email you want. :)

Please give me a little boost if you're into the idea! <3

Finally getting a chance to finish today's episode of The Adventure Zone - I'm into Griffin's new RP system! It's an elegant solution to condensing all this time into a few episodes and still retains the feel of the show.

@b_cavello @csilverman True! I think one thing we'll see if masto keeps growing is media-heavy users running their own small instances to have control over their media hosting. That initial jump to get into the federated TLs of popular instances could be tricky but there's a lot of benefit to going that route - not just control of your hosting but of your security, your blocklist, etc. And fun server side customization to integrate your creative workflow!

@csilverman @b_cavello I wonder if you could piggyback off of more robust services and just have Mastodon display media that's linked from elsewhere instead of uploaded to the instance? You could run into security concerns but maybe that's a more easily solved problem than a hosting nightmare.

I tried the FP-100C negative bleaching trick and it worked great! It's like a super simple way to get the rush of seeing big ol' medium format negatives. I can't wait to get a good scan at work tomorrow.

Next up, getting flash triggers working!

@csilverman @b_cavello I love the "WordPress for social networking" way of looking at it! Actually, there are a lot of former Vine users out there who might jump at a good platform that picks up where it left off, and most of the pieces are in place with Mastodon...

@b_cavello @jasonsteakums I'm thinking you'd probably want to use something like S3 for image storage.

This is a really interesting question, actually. I've been looking at Mastodon as a final productβ€”didn't occur to me to look at it as, I don't know, sort of like Wordpress for social networking.

And you could call it "Mammogram" because it's based on Mastodon which is KINDA SORTA LIKE A MAMMOTH

@jasonsteakums I believe that's what on.vu (which seems to be down right now) is trying to do. I also saw that someone was going to set up mastodon.photography. I'd keep your eye on those two when they come back online.

@b_cavello the file sizes are the point where I'm like, this is a good idea for someone else to do - I wouldn't want that headache for sure!

Is there a Mastodon instance that's basically Instagram? I suppose all you'd need for a masto insta (mastogram?) would be different CSS to display toots on just those instances that want to do it, and people could still follow from other instances and see the default image display... Kinda best of both worlds, photo-heavy display if you want it, vanilla masto if you don't.

@logista I'm really tempted to try one of the Instax Wide conversions I've seen people do once the pack film starts getting too expensive, some of them are so cool: youtu.be/U88i-85m_jE

@logista haha yep it's Fuji FP-100C, I actually just tooted about the negatives! I just learned about that myself, this is my first pack film camera. I'm having to restrain myself from getting more old Polaroids now...

I'm really psyched to try bleaching the negatives (snapitseeit.com/how-to-bleachi), I didn't even know you *could* bleach and scan pack film negatives and the quality seems even better than the positives.

Yesss it works! Now to walk the knife edge of wanting to use this constantly and, well, $2 a shot (and only getting more expensive) film... octodon.social/media/3mho9VtYF

Oooh, my film and materials for modding that Polaroid Land Camera to take AAA batteries are waiting for me at home!

I also need to make a little portable drying box to keep the prints separate while drying when I'm out & about, and I might need to hack together a flash mount to make modern flashes work with the old bulb flash system's delay (but maybe putting a flash on rear curtain mode would work...) because Polaroids SCREAM to be used with vaporwavey color flash gels

yayy projects!

Sure, I don't *need* a Mamiya Universal Press camera, but....

(oh god somebody get me away from ebay)

When your back is jacked up so you have to lay flat on the floor but you still really have to binge episodes of Car Boys, ingenuity will save the day octodon.social/media/dNl7E2FRN

Sometimes my phone screen likes to register phantom touches and flip out, so to the person who just got a rapid fire set of favorite/unfavorite/refavorite/etc on their toot, hope your notifications weren't turned up too loud!

It's like playing social Russian roulette if you've got something written out but not quite edited into coherence and the Phantom of the Touchscreen decides you really want to post RIGHT NOW or message a totally different person than intended
