Can anyone recommend good web-friendly mapping software? I’m looking for something where I can store and display the routes I walk. Google’s MyMaps is limiting, plus it’s Google 😉

I want to:
- plot routes by adding kml or gpx files
- store as many routes on a map as I want (G seems to be limited by number of layers on a map)
- optionally, be able to embed a map on a web site

I don’t need a web app. Desktop (Mac) software would be okay.

Thank you!

@churley79 hmm. Can’t get a good look without creating an account. I’ll have to pass.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

@jason

Have you looked at openstreetmap.org or one of the other sites using it?

@jason I've been trying to use OpenStreetMap.org for my mapping needs. Here's a link to their wiki for MacOS tools: wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ma

I've generally been using OSMAnd+ for android, so can't comment much on desktop tools.

@jdb skimming that page makes it seem like my interaction with the service is to improve their maps, not to create my own for my purposes. Is my understanding incorrect?

@jason @jdb the page doesn't seem to have anything for managing GPX tracks (from what I saw) but there should be software packages available that leverage the OSM data to do what you're looking for.

@jason @KemoNine Seems that way to me, too. Why should I have all of these Android tools to do what Jason describes, but none for a Mac desktop? Even Gnome maps does this better.

@jdb @jason I have no idea. I caved awhile back and went with Locus on Android for my mapping needs. I generally gave up on the desktop side.

It may have something to due with the phones being mini, high end computers and "more sexy" for development than traditional desktop work.

@jdb @jason no. If you digg deeper in the OSM community and tools you will see it's a strong database with massive customizing ways. I use it on most of my mobile devices incl. displaying tracks. There may be a OSM user group in your area, just contact them with your questions.

@jason nextcloud has an app that integrates with openstreetmaps...

@jason no. but i trust them to make useful stuff.

@tethre there may be something in there. Thank you 🙂
