It turns out, Unity wasn't actually doing any meaningful work, it was just re-importing the same asset over and over, because the asset also has a lower-case version, and even though Unity is on a case-sensitive filesystem, Unity itself is not, so it kept overwriting its own "meta" file with one for the other asset.

In addition boosting good ideas from black people, maybe you oughta take them back to your homes and places of work. 🤷🏿

was just thinking about how if I met someone that only used a feature phone, I could either consider them someone who never really got a hang of tech, or a truly ascended ex-techie

Conversation in the meetup call tonight somehow ended up in open source project management, so I tried my best to relay thoughts I've read here about locally-sourced sustainable development, but I was definitely in over my head 😅

I hope no native Spanish-speakers take offense when I joke about "¿"/"¡". I actually really like them and still think that they would have made English easier for me to learn to read.

More wholesome Mastodon content with which to welcome users:
• The bottle of milk
• Squirty cream
• Oat

• there is software for streaming video in tiles, to only display tiles in view and reduce network and decode bandwidth necessary: youtube.com/watch?v=jMB7qLhFXe …but it doesn't look like it could be used in a browser (which would be the benefit of streaming)
• there is an HEVC extension for depth maps: hevc.hhi.fraunhofer.de/3dhevc …but no consumer software supports it

gahh now I'm thinking about pre-rendered VR games again

for a Myst-themed game jam in 2016, I came up with an idea for a fangame involving a chase through multiple ages, but none of the original series' characters (though some heavy inspiration). Just like I wish the main series didn't focus entirely on just the one family. The fangame is kind of in the back of my mind to continue one day also for that reason, because as far as I know, you can't copyright or trademark a plot device (like linking books).

myst lore (no background needed)

Something more personal to me is having found out that it all takes place in "our" universe: one notable location is in New Mexico; some of the games are set in present-day. It was more interesting to me to consider a society, isolated, spread out across innumerable, locationless pocket dimensions.

A microcosmic example is the known controversy over "trap books." These were established in the first games as prisons, at best described as worlds of nothing but empty space, at worst a liminal existence with no concept of time or observability. The 4th game retconned these into actual places, just with no way out.
